On April 15, 2013 at the Boston Marathon, I became one of many survivors. I was just feet away from the second bomb when it went off. The power of the blast immediately took my right leg above the knee and nearly my left leg. I woke up in the hospital missing my right leg, fighting to keep the left leg, covered in burns with shrapnel lodged in my body and in my heart. My recovery was long with many surgeries, skin grafts and hard decisions about whether or not to amputate my second leg. I had to continue my fight for 3 years to keep my left leg, and one of those years consisted of living in Bethesda, Maryland at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
I am blessed to have an amazing and healthy son. Born on my 29th birthday, he is my most precious gift and a source of strength for me no matter the challenge.
It has been very rewarding and enjoyable being a mentor to many, including but not limited to those with missing limbs and limb differences. I have spent time at Camp No Limits working with amazing kids to help them navigate areas of adversity, challenges, limitations, and seek out opportunities for happiness. What I love about my work as a mentor to kids is how inspired and energized I am by their stories, perseverance and ability to embrace hope.
I am dedicating myself to uplifting others by sharing my message of true grit, the power of positivity and not letting yesterday’s hardships get in the way of today’s victories. Let my message and experiences inspire and build connections with your audiences either as a keynote speaker, workshop leader or mentor.
We are only limited by the things that we allow to limit us. The keys to success and productivity are already in our pocket. You just need someone to show you the lock and encourage you to open the door. Through my experience, I have been forced to test this philosophy out and practice it every day. Since loosing my right leg and having very limited use of my left leg, I have chosen not to be limited. To push away the fear and uncertainty, take risks, and open those doors. This approach has allowed me to move on, find happiness and love ( Nicole Browder), enjoy family and achieve amazing things, such as (skiing, completing 8 full marathons on a handcycle, skydiving and so many more amazing experiences and accomplishments)
As a speaker, mentor and innovator, I will bring new life and connection to your next event. Contact me and we can design a workshop or presentation that fits your needs and audience.
